Who Sonny Rollins was

Walter Theodore "Sonny" Rollins was an American jazz tenor saxophonist hailed as one of the greatest improvisers in music history. A Harlem native who worked with Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk, he recorded landmark albums including Saxophone Colossus (1956) and spent two years practicing on the Williamsburg Bridge to reinvent his sound. Rollins received the National Medal of Arts and continued touring into his 80s before pulmonary fibrosis ended his playing career in 2014. He died at his Woodstock, New York home on 25 May 2026 at age 95.
