What Is Gematria?

Gematria is the practice of assigning a numeric value to each letter, then adding those values so a word, name, or phrase becomes a number. Words that share a number are treated as related for study — not as a scientific proof, but as a structured way to compare language.

A short history

Using letters as numbers is ancient. Greek isopsephy and Hebrew gematria both grew out of alphabets that doubled as numerals. In Hebrew, standard gematria (mispar hechrachi) gives aleph through tav values from 1 to 400. Commentators used those totals as a homiletic and mystical device in later Jewish literature, especially in Kabbalistic settings. The Hebrew Bible itself does not lay out a gematria manual — the method is interpretive.

English gematria is much newer. It borrows the idea (letters → numbers → sums) and applies it to A–Z. There is no single historic “correct” English table. Ordinal (A=1…Z=26), Reduction (1–9 cycle), Reverse, English ×6 (Sumerian), Chaldean, and Agrippa-style Jewish mappings are all modern research tools. That is why two calculators can disagree: they are not measuring one law of nature; they are adding different charts.

How a value is calculated

Pick a cipher. Strip or ignore punctuation. Add letter values. Example in Ordinal:

CODE → C3 + O15 + D4 + E5 = 27. English ×6 of the same word is 162. Reverse Ordinal is a different sum because the alphabet is flipped.

What people use it for

Researchers compare names, headlines, dates, sports jerseys, and catalogued events. A responsible workflow is: compute several ciphers, verify the math, search a phrase database for other hits, and keep claims proportional to the evidence. A single matching number is easy to find. Repeated structure across ciphers is rarer — still not a courtroom.

GEMAFIA is a free gematria calculator built for that workflow: 61+ ciphers, letter breakdown, database match, plus sports, dates / Life Path, and number associations. No account is required to calculate.

Gematria vs numerology

Gematria is letter-to-number addition. Numerology often reduces dates and names to a single digit or a master number (11, 22, 33). They overlap — Reduction and Chaldean live in both conversations — but a Life Path from a birthday is not the same operation as summing GEMATRIA to 74. See gematria vs numerology.
