English Gematria (×6 / Sumerian)
When a website says “English Gematria,” it usually means Ordinal values multiplied by six: A=6, B=12, through Z=156. On GEMAFIA this cipher is labeled Sumerian — same math, historic name.
The rule
English Ordinal already maps A=1 … Z=26. English/Sumerian is that sequence times 6:
English total = Ordinal total × 6
You never need a second addition if you already have Ordinal. HELLO is 52 in Ordinal, so it is 312 in English gematria. GEMATRIA is 74 Ordinal → 444 English.

Why ×6 exists
The scale is often linked (in modern decoder lore) to base-60 / “Sumerian” counting and to making English totals sit in a similar numeric range as some Hebrew-style ciphers. Historically, English letter-number experiments are modern compared with Hebrew gematria. Treat ×6 as a consistent English cipher, not as an ancient Babylonian text method.
Reverse Sumerian exists too: Z=6 … A=156. GEMAFIA computes both.
English gematria vs Simple / Ordinal
- Simple / Ordinal — small integers, easy to check by hand.
- English / Sumerian — same ranking of words, stretched by 6. Any Ordinal match is an English match, and vice versa, after scaling.
That last point matters: English gematria does not discover a different ordering than Ordinal. It is Ordinal wearing a ×6 coat. Jewish/Agrippa, Chaldean, and Reverse do reorder letters, which is why a multi-cipher calculator is more informative than English-only.
Calculate it live
Open the free gematria calculator, type a word, and read the Sumerian row. Compare it with Ordinal — it should be exactly six times larger. Then look at Jewish/Agrippa and Reverse; those will not be a simple multiple.
