How to Calculate Gematria

Gematria is addition. Each letter becomes a number; the word’s value is the sum. The only decision that changes the answer is which cipher you use.

The five-step method

1. Choose a cipher. If you do not know which one, use English Ordinal.
2. Keep letters only. “New York” and “NEWYORK” should use the same A–Z sequence unless you have a documented rule for spaces.
3. Look up each letter on the cipher chart.
4. Add. That sum is the total for that cipher only.
5. Repeat in other systems if you are doing research, not a homework check.

Worked example: HELLO

Type HELLO on GEMAFIA and confirm those four numbers before you trust any other cipher on the board.

Worked example: GEMATRIA

G7 E5 M13 A1 T20 R18 I9 A1. Ordinal sum = 74. English/Sumerian = 444 (74 × 6). That is why people who only use the ×6 cipher talk about 444 a lot — it is the same word as Ordinal 74, scaled.

Common mistakes

• Mixing charts. “Jewish gematria” on one site is not always the same table as another. GEMAFIA publishes its Jewish/Agrippa mapping so you can audit it.
• Counting spaces or the. Decide a rule and keep it. The live calculator ignores non-letters for standard ciphers.
• Treating one match as proof. With 26 letters and many ciphers, collisions happen. Look for the same idea hitting in several systems, or matching a documented phrase in the database.
• Using transliterated Hebrew as if it were Hebrew. Writing “chai” in English letters and running Ordinal is not the same as calculating חַי in mispar hechrachi.

When to use a calculator instead of a pencil

Hand math is the right way to learn. It is the wrong way to run 61 ciphers, a database match, a jersey number, and a date span in one sitting. Use the free gematria calculator once you understand Ordinal well enough to spot a bad total.
